It is made of a whole piece of Huanghuali wood.
The Chinese termHuanghualiliterally means "yellow flowering pear" wood.
It is a member of the rosewood family and is botanically classified asDalbergia odorifera.
In premodern times the wood was know ashualiorhualu. The modifierhuang(yellowish-brown)was added in the early twentieth century to describe oldhualiwood whose surfaces had mellowed to a yellowish tone due to long exposure to light.
The sweet fragrance ofhualiis very distinguished,making it different from other kinds of hardwood.
The finesthuanghualihas a translucent shimmering surface with abstractly figured patterns that delight the eye.
The colour can range from reddish-brown to golden-yellow.
Historical references point to Hainan Island in China as the main source of huali. However, the Vietnamese variation of huali suggests similarities in the color, figure, and density with Hainan huali. Top grade Vietnam huanghuali also has great quality and value.
